Managing Your Irrigation

Know Irrigation Needs & System Maintenance

Check practices you currently use
	1. Check water needs for the types of crops grown and review your irrigation system ensuring that it delivers a uniform amount of water to designated plants.
	2. Perform an "Irrigation Uniformity Evaluation" to determine the percent efficiency of your irrigation system.

Irrigation System Repairs

Check practices you currently use
	3. Check to make sure that your irrigation system is delivering water to targeted plants and avoid watering non-target or non-existent plants.
	4. Use a pressure compensation system to provide equal delivery of water to plants.
	5. Check routinely for animal damage and broken or non-working sprinklers.

Runoff Management

Check practices you currently use
	6. Install a tailwater recovery system to capture any irrigation runoff, and reuse it in your growing operation.
	7. Differentiate between stormwater runoff and irrigation runoff and manage each appropriately.
	8. Routinely dry clean work areas to avoid materials being carried into waterways.

Nutrient Management

Nutrient Needs

Check practices you currently use
	9. Review the nutrient needs of your crops and allow for seasonal differences.
	10. Avoid overwatering your crops to minimize nutrient runoff.
	11. Work with technical experts to determine the best nutrient management scheme for your growing operation.

Adjusting Fertilization Methods

Check practices you currently use
	12. Use "Time Released" fertilizer when appropriate.
	13. Apply fertilizer with your irrigation water and adjust your irrigation cycles to allow for maximum uptake of the nutrients.
	14. Use a small, hand-held nutrient analyzer to check the amount of nutrients in any irrigation or runoff water.
	15. Use the services of an analytical laboratory to conduct leaf, soil or tissue analysis to determine nutrient levels.

Storing Fertilizers

Check practices you currently use
	16. Follow label instructions for storage, handling and disposal of fertilizer materials and containers.
	17. Always have your application equipment in good working order. This includes checking your fertilizer tank for leaks.
	18. Keep fertilizer materials dry and covered, preferably in an enclose area.

Pest Management

Using IPM

Check practices you currently use
	19. Familiarize yourself with pests commonly found on your crops and stay up to date on newly introduced and quarantined pests that may become a problem in your area.
	20. Search your growing operation for the presence of pests and monitor their numbers when they are found.
	21. Determine the threshold levels for important pests in question utilizing yellow sticky cards.
	22. Look at alternative growing practices that could minimize pest problems, such as alternative stock, removal of standing water in areas that could breed insects, and other measures that allow for a cleaner overall growing operation.
	23. Manage weeds and landscaping to aid in the reduction of pest numbers.

Managing Pesticides

Check practices you currently use
	24. Familiarize yourself with biological control agents that may be effective in controlling pests.
	25. Consider the safety of non-target pests when deciding what pesticide to use for the targeted pest.
	26. Follow pesticide label instructions for mixing, application, storage and all other safety precautions.
	27. Store pesticides in areas that are under cover and off the ground making sure to inspect storage areas for leaks.
	28. Consider weather conditions, irrigation schedules and where pesticides will be applied to minimize washing off and transport to waterways of the applied material.

Materials Management

Stockpiled Supplies

Check practices you currently use
	29. Stockpiles of materials are placed away from waterways
	30. Contain runoff from any stockpiled materials by berming, using sandbags or wattles.
	31. Manage greenwaste through timely disposal, grinding or composting.

Compost

Check practices you currently use
	32. Establish your composting using appropriate Carbon:Nitrogen ratio of materials
	33. Monitor temperature and moisture on a regular basis.
	34. Contain any runoff from your composting areas by berming, using sandbags or wattles

Using Mulches

Check practices you currently use
	35. Use mulches to minimize runoff and erosion.
	36. Chip or grind green waste and use as a mulch material in target areas to minimize erosion and runoff

Outdoor Area Management

Road Maintenance

Check practices you currently use
	37. Utilize water breaks on gradients over 8% making sure that diverted flow does not directly enter into waterways.
	38. Make use of filter strips to help trap sediments before they reach waterways.
	39. Avoid using roads during wet weather and maintain culverts to allow water to flow freely.
	40. Avoid excessive maintenance to your roads to minimize disturbing the soil.

Erosion Control

Check practices you currently use
	41. Use cover crops to help stabilize the soil and prevent erosion within your growing operation making sure that they do not interfere with the sprinkler pattern around your plants.
	42. Use mulch when necessary in the sprinkler pattern around the base of plants.

Managing Hardscapes

Check practices you currently use
	43. Avoid storing any materials on rooftops that may contaminate storm water as it falls onto those areas.
	44. Inspect rooftops periodically for leaks if used as storage space.
	45. Remove accumulated materials and bird droppings periodically, especially before the rainy season.

Managing Parking Areas

Check practices you currently use
	46. Evaluate your parking areas taking notice of how water is routed.
	47. Periodically clean your parking areas by means of dry cleaning, taking care to protect storm drains.
	48. Inspect your stored vehicles and equipment for leaks on a regular basis making sure that they do not come in contact with storm-water and stored equipment.

General Operation Management

Hazardous Materials

Check practices you currently use
	49. Handle, store, manage and dispose of all hazardous materials according to all applicable regulations and label instructions.
	50. Store hazardous materials off the ground and indoors whenever possible.
	51. Inspect your stored vehicles for leaks on a regular basis making sure that they avoid contact with storm-water and stored equipment. Materials stored outdoors are covered to eliminate the possibility of problems associated with flooding, standing water, roof leaking onto storage areas during rainy weather.
	52. All drums and containers are in good condition and do not contain rusted-out areas that can leak hazardous materials.
	53. Maintain spill kits close to your hazardous materials and ensure that all employees are trained in the use of the spill kit.
	54. Utilize secondary containment practices for hazardous materials that have the potential to discharge those substances.

Waste Management

Check practices you currently use
	55. Keep trash and disposal areas clean and free of debris, making sure that they are inspected, at least weekly, for potential problems.
	56. Load and unload significant materials only in designated areas, ensuring that spills and leaks are cleaned up promptly.
	57. Keep cleaning materials and equipment nearby and in good condition making sure not to saturate trash storage and disposal areas unless there is no possibility that the wash water can enter storm drains.
	58. Keep dumpsters and other waste containers in good condition checking for areas where they have rusted-out and could potentially leak.
	59. Make sure that your loading and unloading equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks are maintained to avoid leaks of hazardous materials in the loading and unloading area.

Vehicles & Equipment

Check practices you currently use
	60. Prevent spills and leaking during fueling. Maintain a spill kit close to the area where fueling takes place. Report significant spills of fuel promptly and make sure employees are trained in its use.
	61. Use drip pans and other containment devices during vehicle maintenance and be sure that equipment stored outdoors is bermed and covered where possible and practical.
	62. Only wash vehicles and equipment in designated areas to reduce or eliminate soap and degreaser contaminated runoff where possible.
	63. Plumb wash areas to sewer while not allowing wash water from degreasing engines, mechanical parts or heavy equipment to infiltrate soil.

Employee Training

Check practices you currently use
	64. Conduct annual water quality employee training that is adequate in ensuring compliance with storm water ordinance.
	65. Documentation of training is maintained on site.

Annual Tasks

Check practices you currently use
	66. Review all facility, activity operations and procedures potentially impacting water quality annually.
	67. Look for illegal storm drain connections or illegal discharges of non-storm runoff into the storm drain system.
	68. Check for illegal disposal practices and take corrective measures by posting anti-dumping messages on or near storm drains.
	69. Implement pollution prevention measures where necessary. Review measures and repair or update annually.
